One of the biggest challenges my clients face is organizing their kitchen. Living Etc. approached me to provide some tips on how to help people struggling with kitchen organization. How can items be grouped efficiently for storage in the kitchen? What are some effective organizers that can be used in the kitchen for storing things? Where should everything be placed to make the most sense?
Living Etc. did a great job providing the best advice. Read the article here and learn what I suggest along with other organizers in the industry.
In summation, pinpoint the tasks you do the most in your kitchen and use your behavior to determine where to begin. Then use proximity and accessibility as your guide. In the article I state, ‘When organizing a kitchen, I use personal behavior and proximity to group items effectively. This requires me to take into account the most commonly performed tasks in each kitchen. It’s not the same for everyone. Some people hate to cook and use the microwave most. Some love smoothies or coffee. Some have small children who love their snacks. Therefore, it’s important to determine the most efficient and ideal space for each task and group items accordingly.’
I like to use the example of everyday dishes and the dishwasher to explain the concept of proximity. Keeping everyday dishes and silverware near the dishwasher makes cleaning up quick and easy. In my home, cleaning up is important to me, and any hindrance to cleaning will prevent it from happening regularly. By storing everyday dishes and silverware near the dishwasher, I am using proximity to determine the best storage location. I suggest using this concept throughout the kitchen to determine where items should be stored.
