Jody contacted Sara Jane Organizing because she needed assistance with decluttering her home. She acknowledged that every room required work, but she was primarily concerned about her daughter, who had trouble getting ready for school in the morning. Her daughter struggled to locate her clothes and school work, which often resulted in frustration, stress, and agitation. Jody was worried about her daughter’s ADHD and was arranging for her to be tested. However, as someone with ADHD herself, Jody recognized the signs.
Jody wanted her daughter to stop feeling guilty when her mornings didn’t proceed as planned. She believed that if her daughter’s room was organized and simple to maintain, her mornings would be much less stressful. As a result, we devised a plan.
After surveying the home, we discovered that there were many toys in Jody’s daughter’s room. The playroom was also overcrowded, and Jody hoped to eliminate many of the toys. Therefore, we spent half a day working in the playroom. This would provide enough space for all of the toys, allowing us to relocate them from her daughter’s room and other areas of the house. It was a significant enough change that Jody may be able to work on her daughter’s room independently in the future.
Decluttering and Organizing
We collected toys from all over the house, including a hallway closet, downstairs, her daughter’s room, and the hallway. Toys were sorted to determine how many we had and what categories they belonged to.
We eliminated toys that were damaged or worn out.
We rearranged the room slightly to accommodate toy storage by category. Barbies, American Girl dolls, and LOL dolls each had their own bins. We didn’t overfill the bins and kept them easily accessible for quick clean-up.
The Results of Getting Organized
As a result, the playroom was tidy, and Jody’s daughter had a minimal, organized bedroom. Fewer items in her daughter’s room meant fewer tantrums and less stress.
Jody, who has ADHD, enjoyed the benefits of body doubling. She was focused the whole time we worked together, and we even had some fun! We talked about dolls, our childhood memories, and life in general. It was a tiring day, but it was also a productive one!
