Techniques to Stay Focused and Motivated While Decluttering and Organizing

Staying focused and motivated while decluttering and organizing isn’t easy. For many, the task of decluttering and organizing seems boring or overwhelming. So, how can you stay focused and motivated on a task you don’t enjoy or one that seems so big and overwhelming? Here is a list of techniques my clients use that they have found work best for them. You can use one or all of them. I’m confident you’ll find something that works for you!

Play Music

Music has the power to put us in a zone, lift our mood, and even bring us calm. But what type of music gives you energy without distracting you from your tasks? The answer varies for everyone.

For some, jazz boosts motivation and keeps them focused, while for others—like my son—rock and roll does the trick. Personally, I enjoy disco! Some people prefer music without vocals. Pay attention to how different genres affect your mood as you listen, and find your perfect soundtrack for staying organized.

Volume is also an important factor. I like to play disco loud enough to enjoy it, but not so loud that I can’t hear the doorbell. Others might prefer softer background music.

With music apps like Spotify, creating the ideal playlist is easy. Start with an upbeat song, add a few mellow tracks to enhance focus, and then finish with something fun. You can customize your playlist to maximize your productivity during the hour!

Don’t forget podcasts. They can also bring a new level of focus for some. I find I can’t pay attention to both organizing and listening to a story. But if it works for you, find a favorite and play it while you work!

Take a Walk

A brief stint of exercise can put our brains in a focused state while also providing a great opportunity to be out in nature. I find that spending time outdoors helps me concentrate, so a walk is always a valuable tool for me. You might discover that a few jumping jacks or running in place can do the trick as well. There’s no question that exercise wakes up the brain, so use it as a tool to gear up for decluttering and organizing.

Create a Deadline

Schedule a day for grandma to take the kids or set up a playdate to keep them occupied. Knowing you have two hours can create the motivation you need to get the job done. You can also arrange consignment appointments or donation pickups to further inspire action. Many of my clients find that hiring a cleaning service motivates them to tidy up. Use this sense of urgency to your advantage.

Progress is a Motivator

You’ll feel much more in control when you begin sorting and visualizing everything you have. In just 30 minutes, you’ll start to see the bigger picture and feel more motivated to continue. This momentum will work in your favor, encouraging you to keep going. You don’t need to commit to a whole day; however, give yourself some extra time in case you find it hard to stop because the feeling of progress is so good that you want to keep going.

Body Doubling

I always emphasize the power of body doubling. Ask a friend to work alongside you—ideally someone who won’t distract you with too much talking, is a good voice of reason, and matches your energy level. You can read more about body doubling in my blog post below.

Accountability Partner

If you don’t have a friend to help you organize, consider finding someone to be your accountability partner. Ask them to check in with you on the day you plan to organize. Just knowing someone will monitor your progress can help you stay focused. You can request a single call or have them check in periodically throughout the day. Additionally, if they have their own projects, you can support each other as accountability partners, creating a win-win situation for both.

Use A Timer

A timer can serve as a powerful motivator to help you stay focused. Simply set the timer for 10, 15, or 30 minutes (adjust to your desired amount). When it goes off, ask yourself, “Am I doing what I am supposed to be doing right now?” It’s easy to get sidetracked, especially when working on a large project. The timer ensures you remain on task. If you realize you’ve been distracted when the timer goes off, take a moment to refocus. If you’ve stayed on track, keep going!

Build in Rewards

Set yourself up for success by incorporating rewards into your project. Consider what reward you will earn after working for 30 minutes—perhaps your favorite snack, a brisk walk, or watching a show you love. You can also integrate rewards into the process itself. For instance, while organizing paperwork, enjoy your favorite show in the background, or pamper yourself with a foot spa as you sort through documents. Schedule a pedicure or manicure for after the task is completed, or plan a dinner with friends that evening. Rewarding yourself for hard work will help keep you focused and motivated, knowing you have something enjoyable to look forward to!
