Clients and colleagues often ask me what I think about Marie Kondo’s methods. I also regularly seek out others’ perspectives. I don’t believe any single method is foolproof or can solve everyone’s problems. In reality, one approach may work well for some people but not for others. Like any system, Marie Kondo’s methods have both pros and cons.
What’s most important to me is that no one feels like a failure if a particular method doesn’t work for them. If you’ve tried Marie Kondo’s approach and it didn’t work, don’t be hard on yourself. Treat the methods you hear about as guides, not strict rules. Tweak them as needed and, most importantly, if they still don’t work, move on. You are not to blame. There is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to organizing.
In this Southern Living article, I share my thoughts on the topic, along with another organizer who offers her own perspective. If you’ve tried Marie Kondo’s method and found it didn’t quite work for you, or if you’re curious about her approach and want to research it first, I highly recommend giving it a read. You may discover more about yourself and what you need to succeed when organizing your home.
