LivingEtc.com recently approached me to share my views on the 80/20 rule and how it can aid people in adopting minimalism. They have published a well-written article that explains the concept of the 80/20 rule, highlights the potential obstacles one may face while using this technique, suggests the spaces where the rule can be implemented, and more.
What is the 80/20 Rule?
The 80/20 rule is the concept that we use 20% of what we own 80% of the time. That means the remaining 80% (the stuff we use less frequently) is clutter. More than ever many of us have aspirations to live more simple lives. Thus, removing this 80% of clutter from our surroundings is a great place to start.
How will the 80/20 Rule Help Me?
Unfortunately for many of us removing clutter is easier said than done. It’s the point at which we must be willing to endure the discomfort of anxiety and indecision and determine whether to keep or discard our belongings. By doing so, we can begin to embrace minimalism and eventually become more proficient at making tough choices and seeing the benefits of a more peaceful and organized home. The struggle you may feel making the hard decisions does get easier the more you work the mental muscle and the more you see the benefits of your labor. Just remember, “Nothing changes if nothing changes.” Small changes over time can make an enormous impact.
To reduce the clutter in our homes, I suggest focusing on the end goal. Imagine how you want your home to look and feel. You can create a vision board, make a mental image, or a list of what you truly want. Write down the things you will be able to do once you declutter, such as spending more time with friends, pursuing your hobbies, playing board games with your children, cooking, and hosting family and friends. Use this vision to guide you with each decision you make. Ultimately, you are choosing between the life you want and the object in your hands. Ask yourself, “What’s more important?” Every decision to let go gets you one step closer to your goal.
