Laila, a woman in her 60s, has multiple sclerosis, and one cluttered room. She resides in a three-bedroom house with her daughter who is temporarily living with her while finishing college. Laila admits MS occasionally makes it difficult for her to organize her home. Laila also wants a place in her home where she can meditate and relax.
Additionally, Laila’s ex-husband passed away several years ago, and she has not gone through his belongings. Although Laila has worked hard to organize her home to make it comfortable and practical, she has one cluttered room that she can’t seem to get through. Laila avoids going through her ex-husband’s things because it makes her sad, and the task has become overwhelming. She also hasn’t put time into organizing the space because it’s just not a high priority. One of Laila’s friends told her about Sara Jane Organizing, and Laila decided to give her a call.
Virtual Organizing Assessment
Sara and Laila had a conversation over the phone regarding Laila’s situation. Laila expressed that she wanted space to meditate but didn’t have room to do it. Sara and Laila agreed that Laila could benefit from periodic virtual organizing sessions. Laila felt confident in doing the work but felt stuck and needed guidance, accountability, and resources. So they schedule a virtual organizing assessment so Sara could see the space and they could develop a plan. During the assessment Laila guided Sara through the home and pointed out areas that overwhelmed her. They were able to put a plan together and set up their virtual organizing sessions.
Laila was a good candidate for virtual organizing sessions because she was motivated to get the job done, she felt comfortable using technology, she understood organizing principles and she wanted to learn more so she could potentially do more projects on her own. What she struggled with was accountability and she was a verbal processor. She likes to talk things through and get ideas from another person. Verbal processing helps her make decisions and move forward.
Virtual Organizing Sessions
Sessions began, and Laila started to see her room transform. With Sara’s help, Laila went through her items, talked through her thoughts and reasoning, and one by one she made decisions. She was decluttering her space. Laila had homework to do between sessions, but she felt capable and confident knowing Sara was available to her as needed and knowing she had a follow up session for accountability.
After four sessions Laila’s cluttered room was organized! She was able to create a meditation area in her uncluttered room so she could focus on herself and her health each day. She considers hiring Sara Jane Organizing a very wise investment.
